1. Match equipment and regional settings
Record the exact board, firmware, region, modem preset, frequency slot and channel configuration for both devices. Meshtastic documents these radio settings; matching relevant settings is part of a real communication check. National frequency, power and use rules still apply; check the regulator and equipment documentation for the place of use.
Use the official firmware setup for the actual board. This worksheet does not certify a device’s legal operation, pick a universal preset or claim that all products sold online are compatible.
2. Review privacy before sending
A channel key is different from a phone login password. Meshtastic warns that default channel settings may use a publicly known key. Review location sharing and whether MQTT internet sharing is enabled; a public MQTT connection may expose mesh locations. Follow its current channel instructions and exchange private channel material through a trusted separate method.
Do not publish a key or personal location in the worksheet. Matching a shared key is not proof of the person’s identity, and this article does not design a new two-password encryption scheme. Plan how to replace shared material if a device is lost.
3. Record a modest observed test
During normal conditions, send a short non-sensitive test message using the hardware’s supported software. Record the sending and receiving times, conditions and whether delivery was actually observed. Change one variable at a time and retain a tested fallback.
Live Bluetooth pairing, LoRa message exchange and encrypted voice are not released Prepper capabilities demonstrated by this website. Do not assume range in one place predicts another, or that a received text provides emergency dispatch. Battery, terrain, interference and other conditions matter.
